Private Lessons

I have enjoyed teaching privately for the last 23 years. My thoughts and ideas around trumpet playing continue to evolve and I love helping each student build a sense of knowledge around the basic truths in trumpet playing and career development. The end goal is to be able to teach ones self, however, many times along the path we need to have a coach to help us see past our own conceptual blind spots. I continue to take lessons myself.

My private teaching approach includes having each student fill out a questionnaire so that we both can have a clear sense of what is actually happening, where you want to go, and creating a sustainable approach to get there. This questionnaire has proven to be incredibly valuable in helping create a positive and productive time together in the lesson.

I also encourage each student to record the lesson(s) for their own private use to get the most out of their investment. Most of the time on our listen back we catch things we simply didn't hear the first time.

Thomas Hooten launched a beautifully articulated performance of the Haydn Trumpet Concerto, with subtle shading to go along with his clear, perfectly focused tone.

The musicians of the Philharmonic played for Gustavo Dudamel as if they meant it and were watching their conductor’s every move. The string section particularly impressed with its rugged and gutsy playing, digging into the meat and expression of phrases. With his opening trumpet call (and continued perfection), Thomas Hooten set the bar of accomplishment.
— Orange County Register

A breakneck percussion section often set the agenda, pushing the other sections of the orchestra into responses that ranged from wisps of sound, in which Tom Hooten’s impeccably clipped trumpet stood out, to hammering ostinatos, with occasional hints of Gershwin momentarily caught up in the action. It was superbly played.
